Lake Martin may be a great place to enjoy the lake life. But what if you do not have a boat at your disposal? There are many fun activities to enjoy in Lake Martin without a boat. (Kayaks not included). Our Lake Martin boating guides includes a list of boat rental places and ways to access the lake. The boating guide has information on Peanut Point, Pirate Island and Goat Island. This is a great article for those who love the land or want to try something new.
It’s almost a waste to spend your entire time on the lake when there are so many trails for hiking, cycling, paddling and horseback-riding. We’ll explore fun activities you can do without a boat in Lake Martin.
Paddle along the Harold Banks Canoe trail
Tallapoosa River stretches 258 miles between Paulding County in Georgia and Wetumpka in Alabama. Harold Banks was the first to solo paddle the entire river in 2009. Harold Banks Canoe Trail was named in 2015 for the 25 scenic river miles that run through Tallapoosa County and Chambers County.
This section, which is the most scenic and popular, takes four hours to float six miles from Horseshoe Bend Bridge up to Jay Bird Creek. You can see Cahaba Lilies in bloom early summer, or bald eagles flying over the rapids. Laura’s Leap, Peter’s Island and other highlights include.
You can technically enjoy this section without a boat, since Alabama Power permits public access. It’s best to enjoy it from the water. Off The Beaten Path Alabama outfitters offer everything you need for a relaxing float, including boats, shuttle services, and even guides if you wish. These trips are popular, so call at least a few days in advance to secure your spot.
Fly Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures
The cries of “War Eagle”, echoing through Alabama, naturally make one think of Screaming Eagle Adventures Wind Creek State Park
Choose between an introductory or advanced course along the picturesque shores of Lake Martin. Eleven zip lines and six suspended skywalks are available. They range from 20 to 70 feet high. There are scenic views everywhere, including the lake and park. The longest zip line is 650 feet long. The zip is a little bit of a pucker, but you can get away with it as long as your shoes are closed-toed.
Hiking Wind Creek State Park
Wind Creek State Park offers much more than zip-lining. There are also 586 campsites and a full-service marina. The trail system is also quite hilly.
Climbing the observation tower is the easiest hike. A spiral staircase winds up the silo, which dates back to 1915. The observation deck on top of the grain silo offers stunning views of the lake. There are 8 miles of hiking/biking and 20 miles of equestrian trails in the park. There are too many trees that have fallen on the trails to make them ideal for biking. However, there are beautiful views as you wind around the lake.
Hiking CRATA Trails
The Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association is devoted to the design, construction, and maintenance of quality hiking trails with well-marked footpaths. The 26-miles are located in Tallapoosa County and Elmore County, around Lake Martin. CRATA trails are varied, ranging from easy to steep and rugged.
Smith Mountain Trails are the most dramatic and popular trails in the CRATA System. The 1-mile loop takes you to the summit of Smith Mountain. You can then climb the restored fire-tower for a breathtaking view of Lake Martin. The Little Smith Mountain Trail, a 2.6 mile detour which takes you to the lake and then back up again is perfect for those who want a bit more adventure. Island Hop Trail is available when the water level in the lake is low.
Hiking Russell Forest
Russell Forest, a 25,000 acre playground, has more than 100 miles of trails for cyclists, hikers and equestrians. The Russell Forest map shows five different types of trails:
- Equestrian loops and hiking trails
- Equestrian, biking, and hiking trails
- Electric/Gas Russell Lands golf cart trails
- Cabin roads
- Paved roads
The golf cart and road trails are in good condition and self-explanatory. The equestrian, biking, and hiking trails are usually non-technical farmroads similar to gravel rides. It’s important to understand the “equestrian and hike nature loops.” Some of them are single-track, especially up and down Heaven Hill. Some trails, such as the Lakeview Trail near the stables have too much horse traffic, and are not suitable for cycling.
- To access the trail system, users must be members of the association. Join the Russell Forest website.
- There are standard rules of etiquette: Bikers give way to hikers and everyone gives way to horses. This rule is especially important in this area, where there are many equestrians.
- Apple and Google Play trail applications are available. These trails do not appear on Google Maps.
- All four-wheelers, ATVs, motorcycles and other vehicles are prohibited from the trails.
- Catharine’s Market has an amazing deli!!! If you are hiking in Russell Lands, you must eat at Catharine’s Market (and maybe buy some goodies to take home later…cheese choice!).
Horseback riding at Russell Crossroads
The Stables At Russell Crossroads offer guided trail rides in the Russell Forest Trail System. This is a wonderful way to get to know the area while bonding with these magnificent animals. If I was a horse, then I’d want to live at The Stables of Russell Crossroads.
Stay at Hank William’s Cabin
Children’s Harbor provides a safe place for children and families with serious illnesses to be themselves. Families and children can attend free camps at the 66-acre retreat center in Lake Martin to connect and meet families who have similar diagnoses. Children with cancer, organs transplants, severe burns and autism are just a few of the illnesses that these populations suffer from. The Hank Williams Cabin, a rental facility at the Lake Martin Retreat, is one way they fund their services.
Hank Williams Cabin, named so because Hank Williams lived there more than 60 years ago, has retained its original decor in the best possible way. Hank Williams could be sitting next to you, sipping Coca-Cola from a vintage glass on the vintage couch as he writes Kowaliga. You can immerse yourself in the country music history and wake up with views of Children’s Harbor Lighthouse. From the private beach, you can watch the sunset. This is more than just a place to sleep. It’s a fun adventure that helps a good cause.
