“St. Eugene Mission Resort combines luxury with a rich historical experience, focusing on the area’s local native history. The resort is located in southeast British Columbia, surrounded by eclectic towns and ski resorts. The building itself has a storied past, originally constructed in 1910 as the first comprehensive Indian “”Industrial and Residential”” school in Western Canada. For 60 years, it served as a school for 5,000 students from the Okanagan, Shuswap, Blackfoot, and Ktunaxa tribes, aiming to assimilate them into Western society—sometimes forcibly.
The resort’s bar and lobby occupy what were once classrooms, while the second floor, which housed priests and nuns, now serves as guest accommodations. The third floor, with its slanted ceilings and a lookout window at the end of the hall, was where the boarding-school students lived. Today, St. Eugene Mission Resort offers a unique blend of luxury and history, providing guests with a profound connection to the past while enjoying modern comforts.”
